Micky Slim
Since a chance live Essential Mix at Global Gathering in 2006 propelling Micky Slim into the DJ spotlight, the Birmingham-bred bad boy has been leaving a path of destruction with his infamous infectious, bass-driven, mashed up, fidgety sets.
Micky’s love affair with house dates back over ten years; nevertheless it was about 4 years ago that things really started to kick off. After playing various bars and clubs around the midlands Micky soon came under the radar of Godskitchen promoter Mark Gillespie who was quick to install Micky as Godskitchen Electric resident. Micky’s Gods residency saw him play regularly to a rapturous home crowd alongside the likes of Erick Morillo, Chris Lake, James Zabiela and Fergie, as well as a debut at Global Gathering. Playing in the same arena as Deep Dish, Steve Lawler and Tiesto, Micky’s luck was about to take a mammoth turn when James Zabiela was unable to show for his Live Essential Mix. Radio 1, who were familiar with Micky’s electrifying sets, gave him the opportunity of a lifetime by recording his live set for the Essential Mix. Micky duly responded by delivering 45 minutes of quality filthy acid, wonky electro and twisted tech house to a worldwide audience. At the same time Micky was making a big impact on the Birmingham after-hours scene, which gave him the chance to develop his style and build up his loyal fan base.
The birth of Micky’s label Bomb Squad Records in 2006 was a chance to develop the sound that Micky had created and to showcase new talent. The label’s first release ‘Acid Is the Bomb’, which was remixed by Jon Gurd received huge support from Radio 1. A collaboration with Chris Lake swiftly followed with ‘Shake" which came out on Rising Music and received great reviews. 2007 was definitely a massive year for Micky having his rework of House of Pain’s ‘Jump Around’ approved and released on Warners; remixing ‘Feel like Dancin’ for the mighty Fingerlickin; ‘The Girls’ by Calvin Harris for Sony BMG; Flex for Dizzee Rascal, 2 remixes for Skint Records and a further remix of the colossal The Freaks ‘The Creeps’. He was also snapped up by top London DJ agency IMD DJs; secured an eight gig residency at the infamous ‘Judgment Sundays’ in Ibiza plus scored himself a residency at the fabulous ‘Le Mix’ in Paris.
If 2007 was massive, then 2008 has been monumental. Micky's gig diary was busier than ever, dates in Russia, Dubai, Canada, Korea, Singapore and China were all confirmed as well as 5 Global Gatherings Festivals including Belarus, Poland, St Petersburg, Ukraine and the UK. Micky closed the main stage in St Petersburg after Dubfire to rapturous 5000 people. A whistle stop tour of Australia alongside Mark Brown for their Cr2 compilation was a massive success with a repeat booking for Micky at the illustrious Good Vibrations Festival tour next year. Micky also completed his second season at Judgement Sundays in Ibiza.
Micky has been furiously working in the studio on original material including a 2009 re-edit of his House of Pain release. Also in the pipeline are some wicked collaborations with Krafty Kuts, Mark Trophy, Stupid Fresh & Escobar & Vito which is set for release early 2009. If all this wasn’t enough, Micky is working on an album project collaborating with Matt White and various guest vocalists. Hating to be pigeon holed, Micky has some interesting ideas for an alter ego that incorporates many different genres of music working on some Funk, Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Garage, Ragga with maybe a dash of Hip Hop thrown into the mix.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Micky is in the process of developing the Bombsquad Sound system, which he is hoping to start touring in early 2009. It will be a 20k sound system with DJs, vocalists with some promising live bands too. They will be hosting at least 4 dates in the 2nd room at Judgement Sundays in Ibiza 2009 and there are some rumblings about an outdoor stage at Global Gathering. To coincide with these events, Micky is currently working on launching Bombsquad TV, a monthly show to be posted on You Tube as well as monthly podcast.Somebody call the emergency services, this man is on fire...
